The Association of Kandylioton

embarks the second forty years

On February 19, 2011, the Association of Toronto Kandylioton celebrated its 40th founding anniversary.

A dinner was held at White Shield Banquet Hall and attended by more than 335 people. A number of Greek dignitaries delivered congratulatory remarks, including: His Grace Bishop Christoforos from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis; Dimitris Azemopoulos, Consul General of Greece in Toronto; Jim Karygiannis, P.C., M.P.; John Cannis, M.P.; and, Mary Fragedakis, Toronto City Councillor.

As well, senior representatives from the Greek Community of Toronto, the Panarcadian Federation of Canada, the Association Kandylioton “Kekrops” of Chicago were also present and spoke.

Emceed by Sofia Papadatos and Evagelos Sotiropoulos, the event was significant for two main reasons: first, it remembered and celebrated those individuals who in 1971 got together to form the Association of Toronto Kandylioton; second, after many years of hard work, the perseverance of the President, Anastasia Sotiropoulos, finally paid off and resulted in a one-of-a-kind historical book that was distributed to each family of the Association.

In addition to reminding those people who came from Greece what they’ve accomplished in this great country of Canada, the book – published by Contos Media with the financial support of many, but especially Coffee Time’s Tom Michalopoulos – will serve as a bright light for future generations of Greek-Canadians and highlight the importance of family, our Hellenic heritage and, most importantly, the Orthodox faith.

The dinner was a remarkable event with excellent food, great music and dance all in a spirit of co-operation and love. We wish the Association of Toronto Kandylioton all the best as it embarks on its second forty years of history.
